Hanford, Kathryn. Cosmic Cookery. Starmast Publications, 1974 (1st Ed.). Softbound. Photography by Chris and Sunny Plant. Back cover photo by Jerry Michael Lab. Just before Easter of 1947, 31-year-old sign painter Allen Noonan (later known as Allen Michael) was at work on a billboard in Long Beach, California, when he became enveloped by what he described as an 'ultraviolet light entwined with gold threads,' which drew him into a spacecraft where he experienced a spiritual awakening and was shown his singular destiny. He would go on to found the One World Family Commune (OWFC) in San Francisco, where the group opened the city's first vegetarian restaurant, Here and Now, in 1967, as well as the One World Family Natural Foods and Entertainment Center in Berkeley (where Amoeba Music is now located). This document of the OWFC's influential cuisine, written by the 'culinary catalyst' at the Berkeley health food store's restaurant, features design and illustration by Lorena Laforest (who wrote Honey & Spice: A Nutritional Guide to Natural Dessert Cookery) and appropriately mind-bending cover airbrushing by Bill Best.
