491: A Novel
Görling, Lars. Grove Press, 1966 (Stated 1st American Printing). Hardbound. Translated by Anselm Hollo. 'It is written that 490 times you can sin and be forgiven,' teases the tagline of the much-censored movie adapted, at the urging of Ingmar Bergman, by Vilgot Sjöman from this novel of institutional violence and youth crime. 'This motion picture is about the 491st.' Race car–obsessed Görling was severely injured in an auto accident the year of the book's publication and would soon after commit suicide. Lovely Grove edition with a jacket centering interlocking numerals, drafted by orgone accumulator enthusiast Roy Kuhlman, and carried over onto an elegant blind-stamped front board.
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Gently bumped corners, but else no notable wear to the book. Mylar-protected jacket has some areas of light to moderate edge-wear, a two-inch closed tear, and a few very subtle creases. 282 pp. Fiction.
