Steinbeck, John. The Viking Press, 1961 (Book Club Ed.). Hardbound. During the publishing process for The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck requested its cover be designed by Elmer Hader, who had impressed the novelist with his work on Billy Butter, a 1936 children's book created in collaboration with his wife Berta and relating the exploits of a feisty goat living in the hills of San Francisco. Hader would go on to create jacket illustrations for East of Eden and this, Steinbeck's last novel, which also features a two-color title page and cover lettering by renowned calligrapher Jeanyee Wong.
Spine is tight, but has a bit of a lean. Clean, unmarked interior. Some bumped corners, but else only very gentle wear to the book. Mylar-protected jacket has some areas of heavy edge-wear, including some chipping and a one-inch closed tear. 281 pp. Fiction.
