At age 27, the young writer realized for the first time, while traveling abroad and standing on deck of a ship, that he was a physical being made of flesh, an epiphany that would shape his disciplined and highly aesthetic vision. In 1970, following a failed coup attempt to restore direct rule by the Japanese emperor, he committed seppuku, a ceremonial suicide involving disembowelment.
