A sustained, low-level absurdism hums along behind the lavish art direction of Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of this social-climbing satire, which spared no expenses on wigs, included scenes shot by candlelight, looked to William Hogarth for mood and composition, and was filmed against the backdrop of IRA unrest, causing the director to fear being a hostage target. This Grove tie-in features the original Thackeray-created etchings—rare for a mass-market paperback—as well as a whimsical self-caricature as frontispiece.
