The novel that evolved out of a meeting with Bob Fosse and the half-ironic notion to write film treatments of either Frankenstein or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Ken Russell, who directed the adaptation and claimed Chayefsky's 'hallucinations were impossible to film', had the writer, who in turn described the director as a 'duplicitous, mean man', banned from the set.
