Bukowski, Charles. Black Sparrow Press, 1998 (33rd Printing). Softbound. BSP's self-taught virtuoso Barbara Martin incorporates an irresistible drawing by house favorite Bukowski to this letterpress printed cover, along with Warren Chappell's calligraphic title face, Lydian, which cheekily references one of the novel's most memorable characters: Lydia Vance, based on Bukowski's former girlfriend, sculptor and poet Linda King. Bukowski stand-in Henry Chinaski is asked his favorite novelist several times throughout the book; he responds with answers varying from Knut Hamsun to John Fante ('Fante was my god,' the actual Bukowski once remarked).
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Very light edge-wear and a gently bumped corner. A few small areas of subtle rubbing to the covers, but nice solid copy overall. 291 pp. Fiction.
