Play It as It Lays

Didion, Joan. Bantam Books, 1971 (1st Bantam Ed.). Softbound. A sublimely pulpy approach to this mass-market paperback cover, featuring Hollywood-esque title type (Didion was working on a screen treatment at the time with her husband, John Gregory Dunne) and a recolored adaptation of Janet Halverson's first-edition jacket glyph, a failed ouroboros of sorts, just missing its tail and alluding to Maria Wyeth's ongoing misfortune. 'It goes as it lays,' the iconic anti-heroine says, 'Don't do it the hard way.'
Spine is tight, but has a slight lean and some cosmetic creasing. Clean, unmarked interior. Light to moderate edge-wear and a one-inch crease to the back cover at the fore-edge foot. 213 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
