Calvino, Italo. Harcourt Brace & Company. Softbound. Translated by Archibald Colquhoun. The second book in Calvino's Our Ancestors trilogy, this arboreal conte philosophique was one of his best-selling and here features cover design by typographic master Louise Fili, who taught herself calligraphy in her teens, using Bob Dylan lyrics as the inspiration for a hand-illuminated manuscript. She later discovered European modernists such as Lucian Bernhard, and in her mid-20s, became senior designer for Herb Lubalin before migrating to Random House's Pantheon Books, where her jacket for Marguerite Duras's The Lover cemented her reputation.

Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Only very gentle-edge-wear and subtle toning to the covers. 217 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
