Slouching Towards Bethlehem
Didion, Joan. Touchstone Books, 1979. Softbound. Didion's classic examination of 1960s counterculture continues to resonate with its distinct and unwavering wryness. Lawrence Ratzkin designed many of her typography-forward covers of the '70s and '80s, as well as editions of J. G. Ballard's Crash, Donald Barthelme's Snow White, P. G. Wodehouse's The Most, and Walter Evans-Wentz's English translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Here he gives a Day-Glo treatment to his vision of the Didion brand, with an elegant use of an italicized Bookman that has been tightly spaced and aggressively cropped.
Tight spine has a subtle slump and some cosmetic creasing and sunning. Clean, unmarked interior. A heavily bumped corner at the front foot of the fore-edge, but else no notable wear. 238 pp. Features Rare & Collectible.
