A quartet by the chronically censored author, all sporting the unmistakable New Directions look: titling pushed to the margins and innovative B&W imagery, ranging from Kuhlman's wryly minimalist composition to Scott's dreamy photo-collage to Koval's capturing of a bronze head of Miller sculpted by Marino Marini. Ever the paradox, press founder James Laughlin insisted that people shouldn't '[buy] books by eye' yet acknowledged, 'I have had no bad conscience about using [designers] to increase sales.'
All four books have tight, square spine, with only very light cosmetic creasing. There are a few minor instances of notes/underling to some of the titles, as well as some areas of toning and light to moderate edge-wear. New Directions.
