The Transmigration of Timothy Archer
Dick, Philip K. The Transmigration of Timothy Archer. Timescape Books, 1982 (1st Timescape Paperback Printing). Softbound. Dick began writing the VALIS trilogy after experiencing a series of strange visions in 1974, and two years later he completed an early version of the first title in the series, posthumously published years later as Radio Free Albemuth. He so radically revised this manuscript at the time, however, that an entirely different version was released in 1978, simply titled VALIS and followed by its sequel, The Divine Invasion in 1981, published a year before Dick's death, which occurred before completing the planned third book, The Owl in Daylight. He had taken a break in between to complete The Transmigration of Timothy Archer, a gnostic mindbender which, while not technically part of the VALIS series, combines with the first two books to, according to Dick, 'form a trilogy constellating around a basic theme.' This edition was published as part of Pocket's prominently branded Timescape imprint, which was named after the eponymous 1980 time-travel novel by astrophysicist and high-level promoter of Mars colonization, Gregory Benford.
