The Haunter of the Dark and Other Tales
Lovecraft, H. P and August Derleth (Ed.). Panther Books, 1970. Softbound. 'One of [Lovecraft's] finer tales,' according to Fritz Leiber, '(and his last),' 'The Haunter of the Dark' was written in response to Robert Bloch's 1935 tale, 'The Shambler from the Stars', in which a thinly disguised version of the Cthulhu mythos creator is murdered by a star vampire. Here, Lovecraft gets his revenge by dispensing with a character named Robert Blake under equally horrific circumstances; Bloch, however, would get the last laugh in 1950, picking up where his colleague left off with his story, 'The Shadow from the Steeple'.
