Run River
Didion, Joan. Pocket Books, 1978 (1st Pocket Books Printing). Softbound. A Harlequin-worthy watercolor to the cover of this mass-market edition of Didion's debut novel, a Californian high melodrama that the writer, decades later, would disavow. From the beginning, the book suffered from titling troubles: its working title was Night Season, which later morphed into the shockingly corny Harvest Home. Even after Run River was finally decided upon, a comma was inserted—Run, River—by her English publisher, Jonathan Cape, an intervention which, according to Didion, 'wasn't of very much interest to me because I hated it both ways.'
Spine is tight, but has some sunning and cosmetic creasing. Interior is clean and unmarked. Moderate edge-wear and some toning to text and inside covers. 248 pp. Mass-Market Paperbacks.
