Paris Spleen
Baudelaire, Charles. New Directions (14th Printing). Softbound. Translated by Louise Varèse. A lovely ND edition of Baudelaire's groundbreaking exercise in prose poetry, featuring design by Gertrude Huston ('Her covers suggested the influence of Alvin Lustig but tended more toward the whimsical,' notes Ian S. MacNiven), who met New Directions founder James Laughlin at a Halloween party in 1945 and would eventually marry him in 1990, twelve years after she ended her regular work with the company. Here Huston incorporates a wood engraving by Pierre Eugène Vibert into a frank, Roman capitals–dominated cover.
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some light to moderate edge-wear and areas of very subtle soiling to the covers. Former seller stamp to bottom edge. 118 pp. New Directions.
