What Are Masterpieces?
Stein, Gertrude. Pitman Publishing, 1970. Softbound. 'A well is a place from which out of which water is drawn and what is drawn,' writes Stein in 'Jean Cocteau', a poem included in this remarkable compilation assembled by Robert Bartlett Haas, who met and interviewed the linguistic experimentalist in her old age and went on to devote much of his career to cementing her reputation. Features a cerebral portrait of the artist to the title spread, as well as a whimsical sketch of her beloved poodle Basket, both drawn by close friend and avant-garde itinerant Francis Picabia, and cleverly reproduced here against cyan-printed grounds.
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Former owner name to the half-title, but interior is else clean and unmarked. Corners are bumped, cosmetically affecting some of the text block. Moderate edge-wear. 104 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
