Miss Lonelyhearts
West, Nathanael. Avon Books, 1965 (6th Avon Printing). Softbound. Afterword by Stanley Edgar Hyman. Cover illustration by Nick Fasciano. In 1965, Avon implemented a format innovation, 'attack[ing] the problem of the dogeared paperback by cutting off the ears', according to a contemporary New York Times article, resulting in distinctive rounded corners at the fore-edge head and tail. Perhaps a bit too avant-garde for the drugstore racks, the novelty would last for only a year, during which time the publishers issued titles including Aldous Huxley's Those Barren Leaves, John Barth's End of the Road, and, ironically, this takedown of mechanized mass culture by the influential satirist.
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. A few small areas of very subtle soiling to the covers, but no other notable wear. 128 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
