Rampo, Edogawa. Charles E. Tuttle Company, 1988 (19th Printing). Softbound. Translated by James B. Harris. Influenced by Western mystery writers like Edgar Allan Poe (his nom de plume is a phonetic approximation of 'The Raven' author's name), Rampo was censored during the leadup to World War II by the Japanese government for his story, 'The Caterpillar', which tells of a veteran's appalling disfigurement. This edition, with its hard-to-find cover featuring a drawing by Masakazu Kuwata, was translated orally by Rampo reading each sentence to Harris, who could speak but not read Japanese.
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Only the gentlest of shelf-wear. 222 pp. Fiction.
