Gaddis, William. Alfred A. Knopf, 1975 (Stated 1st Paperback Ed.). Softbound. The follow-up to Gaddis's poorly received debut novel, The Recognitions, this novel, two decades in the making, satirizes what the author called 'the American dream turned inside out' and revels in its postmodern innovations: told almost entirely in unattributed dialogue, it's undivided into chapters and transitions via what some have called 'French scenes'. Eye-catching numismatic cover by Janet Halverson, who also created that of The Recognitions, as well as the first editions of Joan Didion's Play It as It Lays and Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
Spine is square and tight, but has some cosmetic creasing. Clean, unmarked interior. There is a raged edge to p. 161/162, due to a production error. Gentle edge-wear, some bumped corners, and areas of light toning. 726 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
