Democracy: A Novel
Didion, Joan. Simon and Schuster, 1984 (1st Ed., 1st Printing). Hardbound. Jacket design by Lawrence Ratzkin. Design by Edith Fowler. Author photo by Quintana Roo Dunne. A book notable for its genre-blurring narration by Didion herself, who chronicles the exploits of her fictitious acquaintance, Inez, a senator's wife having an affair with a war-profiteering CIA agent. A lovely jacket treatment to this first by the great Ratzkin, as well as a fantastic title spread by Fowler. Didion prized this book above all her others, and a contemporary review by Mary McCarthy compared its structure to that of a jigsaw puzzle.
Spine is tight, but has a slight skew. Clean, unmarked interior. Gilt to spine remains bright. Very subtle foxing to the top edge. A two-inch crease to the back jacket flap, but no other notable wear to the jacket. 234 pp. Fiction.
