Bear: A Novel
Engel, Marian. McClelland and Stewart, 1976 (1st Ed.). Hardbound. As founder and chair of the Writers' Union of Canada (WUC), Engel advocated for royalties for library loans, lamenting that authors are expected 'to live off that vapourous substance "prestige",' and that refusing them compensation was a copyright violation. When she started writing this tale of a lonely archivist's relationship with a bear, she intended the piece to be a contribution to a never-published collection of pornographic literary fiction as a fundraising project for the union; she later developed it into a novel-length work and dedicated it to her therapist.
