Theory of Colours
Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von. The MIT Press, 1970 (Later Printing). Softbound. Translated and annotated by Charles Lock Eastlake. Cover design by Evelyn Bessudo. Despite its back copy declaring that 'Goethe's conclusions have been repudiated', the research recorded in this study of color—a compelling hybrid of art, science, and spirituality—was considered by the German polymath to be his greatest work. 'He to whom nature begins to unveil her open secrets,' he asserted, 'feels an irresistible longing for her worthiest interpreter, art'—and that sentiment echoes throughout the book, issued here in an edition that retains its 1840 typography, and is introduced by physicist Deane B. Judd and cheekily blurbed by Beethoven.
In lovely shape: tight, square uncreased spine; clean, unmarked interior. Only the gentlest of edge-wear. 423 pp. Art.
