Budge's improbable rags-to-riches biography claims he was born in 1857 to the daughter of a Cornwall hotel waitress (his father has never been identified) and left school at the age of 12 to learn Biblical Hebrew and Syriac under the tutelage of a mysterious instructor who later introduced him to the British Museum's pioneering Egyptologist, Samuel Birch. He would later take over as Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities, serving in that role for three decades, overseeing colonial plunder, dabbling in paranormal experiments, and penning this influential two-volume study of the culture's deities.
Both books have tight spines with only the slightest of leans. Volume I has a former owner name in ink to the verso of the first (blank) leaf, but interior is else clean and unmarked. Volume II has a clean, unmarked interior and a four-inch crease to the first two leaves (frontispiece and title page) at the fore-edge head. Both volumes have some bumped corners, edge-wear, and areas of subtle creasing to the covers. Western Esotericism.
