The Watcher & Other Stories
Calvino, Italo. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1975 (1st Harbrace Paperbound Library Ed.). Softbound. Polish cover designer Stanislaw Zagorski is known for his exaggerated, dreamlike album covers, including the Velvet Underground's Loaded ('The New York subways reminded me of a giant monster,' he said). Here he satirizes campaign propaganda in this two-color nod to the uniparty, a reference to the collection's title story, whose protagonist, according to Alan Cheuse in a contemporary review, 'witness[es] (for the reader) images of the fabulous meaning and worth of the crooked, broken, sickly, and contradictory things of this world.'
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Former owner name to the half-title, but interior is else clean and unmarked. Some areas of creasing and edge-wear to the covers. 181 pp. Fiction.
