The Glass Bead Game (Magister Ludi)
Hesse, Hermann. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1969. Hardbound. First published as Das Glasperlenspiel in Zürich in 1943 by Fretz & Wasmuth. Translated by Richard and Clara Winston. Foreword by Theodore Ziolkowski. The second English translation of Hesse's final full-length novel (the first was published in 1949 under the title Magister Ludi). The author's original intention was to include several different reincarnations of Joseph Knecht, but instead settled for masking the character's earlier lives as three appended short stories. Beautiful book design by socialite Pat de Groot, who hosted John Waters at her Provincetown home, and a fantastic wraparound jacket illustration by David Holzman, who took inspiration from the Chicago Imagists and black folk art.
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Mylar-protected jacket is price-clipped. Only the gentlest of shelf-wear to both jacket and book. 558 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
