Gaddis, William. The Recognitions. Meridian Books/The World Publishing Company, 1963 (2nd Meridian Printing). Softbound. Gaddis's debut novel was poorly received upon its publication in 1955 (only Robert Graves and the likely pseudonymous Fire the Bastards! self-publisher Jack Green came to its defense) and didn't gain mainstream critical acclaim until two decades later, after his second book, J R, won the National Book Award. Fantastic stacked-Roman cover design by Janet Halverson, who is best known for her iconic designs for the first editions of Joan Didion's Play It as It Lays and Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Former owner name to half-title, but interior is else clean and unmarked. Spine is heavily creased and has a pronounced slump. Some rubbing and sunning to the covers, as well as a very small former seller label to front cover. 956 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
