Myths, Dreams, and Religion
Campbell, Joseph (Ed.). Myths, Dreams, and Religion. E. P. Dutton & Co., 1970. Softbound. An appropriately dreamy wraparound cover to this Campbell-edited anthology, designed by James McMullan, who worked with Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast's Push Pin Studios, and later helped to develop the aesthetic of New York Magazine, becoming a contributing editor in 1974 and famously creating artwork for the Saturday Night Live–inspiring Nik Cohn article, 'Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night' (the movie's art direction draws heavily from McMullan's illustrations). Known for his anatomical mastery and prolific output of theatrical posters, McMullan, according to Mark Rozzo, 'is to modern-day New York what Toulouse-Lautrec was to 19th-century Paris: the poster artist who sums up the spirit of his age.'
