Sartre, Jean-Paul. Présence Africaine, 1963. Softbound. Translated by S. W. Allen. Présence Africaine, a pioneering postcolonial journal and press founded by Alioune Diop, published the work of everyone from Aimé Césaire to André Gide, as well as this book-length essay by Sartre, an elegant bedside edition whose cover is letterpress printed in classic black and red on matte wraps. Allen, also known as Paul Vesey, took over the editing and translation work for the publisher's English releases after Richard Wright left France to star as Bigger Thomas in the 1951 adaptation of Native Son.

Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Very gentle edge-wear, but no other notable wear. 65 pp.
