Moby-Dick or The Whale
Melville, Herman. Albert and Charles Boni, 1931. Softbound. The Boni brothers cofounded a Greenwich Village bookstore as teenagers and would go on to innovate several book club and paperback publishing imprints, including Little Leather Library, Modern Library, and the Depression-era Bonibooks, which reprinted classics like this Howard Simon–illustrated beauty. Simon, who studied under Japanese printmakers, was part of an early wave of artists who incorporated asymmetry, two-dimensionality, and other mokuhanga-influenced characteristics into their work in a way that would transform modern art and design.
