Good Morning, Midnight
Rhys, Jean. Harper & Row, 1970. Hardbound. The book whose poor reception in 1939 made Rhys disappear and retire from writing for almost two decades, causing Selma Vaz Dias to place ads in prominent periodicals when she sought the author’s permission to adapt it to a BBC radio play in 1957, which in turn enabled the Dominican-born novelist’s comeback. Cover designer Jacqueline Schuman, who here dazzles with a silkscreen-inspired riff on St. Veronica’s Sudarium, is also noted for her wallpaper-inspired covers for E. P. Dutton’s Barbara Pym series and the Deco-influenced Colette titles published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux’s Noonday imprint.
Spine is tight, but has a pronounced lean. Boards have some areas of discoloration. A very small, strange ink-stamp reading 'Hollywood' to the copyright page. Interior is else unmarked, but has a few small areas of soiling. Jacket is price-clipped and has some light edge-wear. 190 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
