From Sphinx to Christ: An Occult History
Schuré, Édouard. From Sphinx to Christ: An Occult History. Steinerbooks, 1970. Softbound. Paul M. Allen, who became an early proponent of anthroposophy in the US after learning about the system from actor Michael Chekhov, writes in his introduction to this occult classic, 'To Edouard Schure in a moment of extra-sensory perception appeared . . . the divinely Illuminated Ones whom we know as Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras and Plato, and recognized that through them all moved the impulse of the eternal, Secret Wisdom.' Schuré's life was marked by three important friendships: with Richard Wagner, whose acquaintance he sought out after seeing Tristan and Isolde; with Greek critic Marguerite Albana Mignata, who was twenty years his senior and whom he described as his 'muse'; and with Rudolf Steiner, whose esoteric dramas would be largely influenced by those written by Schuré. Another stunning Steinerbooks cover here, uncredited, but very likely designed by Susan Cobin Stern, with exemplary CMYK color blocking and lovely use of a shaded three-dimensional display face.
