AIDS and Its Metaphors
Sontag, Susan. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1989 (Stated 1st Ed.). Hardbound. Design by Dorris Huth. Jacket design by Drenttel Doyle Partners. Signed by Sontag to the half-title. This book that takes the metaphors the critic attributed to cancer in Illness as Metaphor and expands on them in the context of the AIDS crisis. While gay activists at the time critiqued the analysis as too abstract (and Camille Paglia uncharacteristically agreed with them when they 'rightly clobbered' the work), Sontag's assertions remain relevant: AIDS had created a new concept of illness, she writes, one discussed using military jargon, and one whose diagnosis was not based on demonstrated symptoms, often resulting in arbitrary tabulations.
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Metallic stamping to spine remains bright. No notable wear to the book or jacket. 95 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
