Steinbeck, John. Tortilla Flat. Penguin Books, 1979. Softbound. $15.

Steinbeck, John. To a God Unknown. Penguin Books, 1978. Softbound. $15.

Two Steinbeck classics with covers by prolific Penguin designer Neil Stuart. Stuart, who is known for his tessellated One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (by Ken Kesey) and his ocular ultra-closeup for Junky (by William S. Burroughs), here combines lovingly illustrated sunken horizons and Adrian Frutiger's fantastic mid-century slab-serif, Egyptienne, tying them together with a citrusy Californian palette.

Both books have tight, square, uncreased spines with some sunning. Both have clean, unmarked interiors. Areas of very gentle edge-wear and subtle toning to the interiors. Penguin.
