The Handmaid's Tale
Atwood, Margaret. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1986 (1st American Paperback Ed.). Softbound. Incredible composition to this cover illustration featuring a looming Berlin-esque wall by Fred Marcellino, whose influential body of work includes the first editions of Barry Hannah's Airships and Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities. According to Steven Heller, Marcellino 'challenged the strict marketing conventions . . . that required gigantic type for the author's name and a small, literal illustration of the plot or theme . . . [and] introduced subtly painted and smartly lettered mini-posters that established allure.'
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some lightly bumped corners and very subtle toning to the covers. 311 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
