First published in 1912, this eclectic compilation of manifestos, correspondence, musical notations, and nearly 150 illustrations, is, according to the back cover copy, 'one of the pivotal works of 20th-century art history.' In a 1911 letter from Kandinsky to Marc, the Russian painter conceived of the almanac by writing, 'We will put an Egyptian work beside a small Zeh . . . a Chinese work beside a Rouseau, a folk print beside a Picasso . . .'
