Hamsun, Knut. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1971 (2nd FSG Printing). Hardbound. Translated by Gerry Bothmer. First published in 1892, this gnostic take on the Christ story is beautifully reissued here with design by Herb Johnson, whose use of ornament-built motifs references Bruce Rogers (Johnson was an avid collector of the typographer's work) and whose magenta boards and sienna end-sheets seamlessly join with another striking jacket by Milton Glaser, the Push Pin Studios founder who, as noted by Paula Scher, is known for 'combin[ing] eclectic, often historic typography with illustrations that were idea-based, not nostalgic.'
Book is in lovely shape, with tight, square spine, clean, unmarked interior, and gilt to spine that remains bright. Price-clipped jacket has some areas of toning and a small crease to the rear flap. 340 pp. Fiction.
