Mishima: A Vision of the Void
Yourcenar, Marguerite. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1986 (Stated 1st Ed.). Hardbound. First published in Paris in 1980 as Mishima ou la vision du vide by Editions Gallimard. Translated by Alberto Manguel. Jacket photo by Eikoh Hosoe. An integral biography of the novelist, who at age 27 realized for the first time, while traveling abroad and standing on deck of a ship, that he was a physical being made of flesh, an epiphany that would go on to shape his disciplined and highly aesthetic vision. Lovely design to this edition, with chrysanthemum fleuron uniting jacket, front board, and headings, by Cynthia Krupat, who Wayne Koestenbaum described as 'the Edith Head of book design' and Maurice Sendak called 'the greatest designer living'.
Tight spine has a slight lean. Clean, unmarked interior. Metallic stamping to spine remains bright. Some areas of sunning to the boards. Jacket has some gentle edge-wear and areas of toning to the flaps. 152 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
