Aesop's Fables for Modern Readers
Aesop and Eric Carle (Illustrated by). Peter Pauper Press, 1965. Hardbound. Before this book, Carle's children's illustration work had consisted of line drawings for textbooks; here he employs relief printing anticipating the iconic collage images that would define his style. Founded by Peter Beilenson in 1928 in his parents' basement, Peter Pauper Press was just one of many projects the publisher/printer juggled in the years before he married typographer Edna Rudolph, who helped dial in the company's role as producer of fine press books for a mass audience (Beilenson's imprint Blue-Behinded Ape issued often erotic works deemed too 'unrespectable' for Peter Pauper).
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some light to moderate edge-wear and toning to the boards. Toning and heavy edge-wear to the jacket, which is not price-clipped and has a few chips. 62 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
