Two on David Lynch's Dune
Herbert, Frank. Dune. Berkley Books, 1984 (35th Printing). Softbound. $15.
Naha, Ed. The Making of Dune. Berkley Books, 1984. Softbound. $15.
A making-of chronicle of the Lynch production and its movie tie-in companion. Herbert's meticulous research for the book's setting is acknowledged by its dedication, 'in humility and admiration', to dryland ecologists. George Lucas wasn't so conscientious: Star Wars (which Herbert said he found 'boring'), incorporates multiple Dune-inspired tropes: a hero who hails from a desert planet where futuristic mining vehicles share the arid landscape with many-toothed worms and technology enables moisture-harvesting from the atmosphere.
There is some creasing to the mass-market tie-in's spine, as well as some edge-wear. Its interior is clean and unmarked and its pages are toned. 'The Making of' has a tight, square, uncreased spine and clean, unmarked interior. There are some areas of edge-wear and very light creasing to the covers. Fiction/Cinema.
