Two Healthcare Critiques by Ehrenreich and English
Ehrenreich, Barbara and Deirdre English. Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers. The Feminist Press, 1973 (2nd Ed.). Saddle-stitched pamphlet. $24.
Ehrenreich, Barbara and Deirdre English. Complaints and Disorders: The Sexual Politics of Sickness. The Feminist Press, 1973 (1st Ed.). Saddle-stitched pamphlet. $24.
Two deep dives into the patriarchal corner on healthcare, positing: 'Political and economic monopolization of medicine meant control over its institutional organizations, its theory and practice, its profits and prestige. . . . Total control of medicine means potential power to determine who will live and die, who is fertile and who is sterile, who is "mad" and who sane.' First published by the pair's small press, Glass Mountain Pamphlets, these Feminist Press editions feature cover design by Gilda Hannah Kuhlman (aka Gilda Rosenblum), who worked as art director for New Directions during the 1960s.
Both books have saddle-stitched bindings that remain sound, although Complaints and Disorders has some subtle tearing around its staples. Both have clean and unmarked interiors, although Complaints and Disorders has a former owner name to its title page. Light shelf-wear to both. Politics & Philosophy.
