On Certainty / Über Gewißheit
Wittgenstein, Ludwig, G. E. M. Anscombe (Ed.), and G. H. von Wright (Ed.). J. & J. Harper Editions, 1969 (1st Ed. Thus). Hardbound. Translated by Denis Paul and G. E. M. Anscombe. Born in 1913 to an Austrian steel magnate (his family was second in wealth only to the Rothschilds), Wittgenstein grew up watching Brahms and Mahler give concerts while seated at one of his home's seven grand pianos, and would later remark, 'Music came to a full stop with Brahms; and even in Brahms I can begin to hear the noise of machinery.' This key text, published decades posthumously, consists of the temperamental philosopher's notes written in the months before his death and left at the home of Elizabeth Anscombe, who here compiles them along with passages from his notebooks.
