Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra
Nietzsche, Friedrich. Éditions Gallimard, 1963. Softbound. Intro by Henri Thomas. Zarathustra, who is named for the ancient mystic Zoroaster, first made an appearance in Nietzsche's earlier book The Gay Science, and returns here for the philosopher's most celebrated work, which was conceived in 1881, near a 'pyramidal block of stone' on the shores of Lake Silvaplana in Upper Engadine, at which time he paused to make a small note reading, '6,000 feet beyond man and time'. Lovely little French-language Livre de poche, translated by Rilke collaborator Maurice Betz and packaged with a dreamy watercolor cover illustration and tangerine edges.
Spine is tight, but has a slight slump. Clean, unmarked interior, with a few small areas of rubbing to the front matter. Some light to moderate creasing and edge-wear to the covers. 445 pp. Foreign Language.
